The first cartoon course took place at Kyoto Seika University KSU in 1973 but “story manga” has only been institutionally accepted since 2000. Nowadays it dominates the manga faculty. The dean, Takemiya Keiko, a master of the science fiction – shôjo manga, sees it as an essentially “organic language”. The stories of Christina Plaka, at KSU since 2010, and Koo Bon-Won, who came to Kyoto in 2005 after studying Japanese studies in Bonn, the diary manga by the art historian Ichikawa Kei as well as the narrative installation by Lee Hyunja, who has been attached to the KSU manga faculty since 2002, prove that comic-suitable storytelling for the reader is more important than elaborate drawing or absolute self-expression. Posters by Luo Rong Rong (Cartoons), An Heejeong (Illustrated Books) and Olga Antononoka (Theory) will also be shown.
