“Haarmann”, a 48-page comic album in black and white came out exactly 20 years ago, at the 4th Erlangen International Comic Salon 1990. It was about the Hanove-rian serial killer Fritz Haarmann. This first album ended just as things became excit-ing and the following two albums were never published. The author’s name was Peer Meter and he was already living in Worspwede at the time. Peer Meter came forward again three years ago. He wanted to find an artist who could draw his “Haarmann” again and this time completely. Isabel Kreitz, the well-known artist from Hamburg was his final choice. The volume will be published by Carlsen in autumn 2010 and probably 2011 by Casterman in a French translation. Peer Meter has been interested in serial killers for many years because they are psy-chologically abnormal and mysterious and their fate highlights how a society reacts to deviance at a certain point in time. Gesche Gottfried, the female serial killer from Bremen, was the subject of years of research by Peer Meter. This led to several books, a play and the graphic novel “Gift” (poison) with drawings by Barbara Yelin, an artist from Berlin. It has just been pub-lished by Reprodukt in Germany and in France by Éditions de l’An2. “Gift” is the only one of the six works represented in the exhibition that has already been published. Whether Isabel Kreitz or David von Bassewitz, who is taking on the case of the serial killer Karl Denke in “Vasmers Bruder” (Vasmer’s brother), Gerda Raidt, the illustrator from Leipzig who is drawing her first comic with “Böse Geister” (evil spirits), the experienced artist Nicola Maier-Reimer with “Ein chinesischer Affen-hund” (A Chinese Monkey Dog) of the young artist Julia Briemle with “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” (A Little Nicht Music) – they are all still working and are at different stages of development.
